Catholic Schools Light The Way

January 27 - February 1, 2008

The week schools across America open their doors and join together
in a special celebration of how Catholic schools "Light the Way."

Catholic schools really do "Light the Way," by providing a faith-based education that supports the whole child in improved learning, and in leading a fulfilled, balanced and meaningful life. Catholic Schools also "Light the Way"
by supporting families and making a positive
and lasting impact in our communities.

We'd like to invite you to join us during this week, to discover more about
the special role our schools play in the positive growth of our children.

Sunday, January 27, 2008 ~ Kick-Off
The church environment will be decorated by the school secretary, aide and Junior Beta Club members. After the 8:30 a.m. Mass, the Beta Club will join the Parish Family Life Committee in serving donuts and distributing a copy of the School Profile and a “Save My Child a Desk” Form 2008-2009.
A school parent will speak after Communion at each weekend Mass about the value of Catholic education and the quality education at St. Joseph School. Pictures and articles about the school are enclosed in the parish bulletin.
In addition, parents from our support parishes will speak at their churches after Communion, distribute information about our school and answer questions about SJS as parishioners exit the church.

Monday, January 28, 2008 ~ Appreciation Day
The whole school will make appreciation cards for everyone who helps at SJS (bus drivers, Home and School officers, kitchen helpers, lunchroom and playground moderators, and all of our volunteers) to go with a creative craft project gift. After lunch the entire school will play bingo because this is our most important fundraiser for the school. Prizes are being donated by the families. Healthy snacks will consist of ranch gold fish and juice.

Parents, friends and guests of all the surrounding communities are
also invited to join us.

Wednesday, January 30, 2008 ~ Talents
SJS will recognize all of our helpers and volunteers with a “cute” craft creation and a special card signed by everyone. At 1:35 p.m. we will have a talent show in Hughes Hall. Everyone is invited.
Dress: Dress in an outfit that shows one of the talents God gave you.

Thursday, January 31, 2008 ~ Spelling Bee, Open House & Family Night
At 9:30 a.m. SJS will host our annual school Spelling Bee. (Please note that last year our own SJS student, Bobby Corrigan, presently in grade 7, won the Portage County Spelling Bee by finishing first in the District Competition. We continue to be so proud of him for this great accomplishment.)
At 6:30 p.m., families are invited to come to our open house. The special attraction will be a gorgeous surprise for each parent. These will be displayed on each student’s desk. Following the school tours, everyone will help themselves to nibblies provided by families with students in grades kindergarten, two, four, six and eight. Our Home and School Association will then provide a delightful presentation entitled, “Math Magic”. (This presentation ties right in with our OCSAA Math Goal: 2007 – 2013). New families to SJS, and families who may want to “check out” our school are most welcome to participate in the events of the entire evening.
Dress: During the day – dress-down. Family Night – uniform

Friday, February 1, 2008 ~ St. Blasé Prayer Service & Student Appreciation
A St. Blasé Prayer Service with the Blessing of Throats will be prayed at 9:20 a.m. Everyone is invited. In the afternoon the teachers will have a special student appreciation time in their homerooms.

The school environment will include a seven foot by six foot window display in each classroom and office depicting different areas of the curriculum. All of the designs will be done in a stained-glass motif in keeping with the symbol from the (NCEA) Nathional Catholic Education Association. These window displays will be visible through out the neighborhood.

Note: If SJS is canceled, the day and evening activities are also canceled for that day.

Thank you to our Catholic Schools Week Committee,
the Student Advisory Council, and the Home & School Association for
planning & carrying out our celebration of Catholic Schools Week.
