All of us teachers and staff, who will be leaving St. Joseph School,
would like to say a special thank you to your family.

2009/2010 St. Joseph School Faculty & Staff

Miss Beth FrankMiss Beth Frank ~ Principal (1997 - June, 2010)

Dear Families of St. Joseph School,
One of the questions our students and all of you are going to be asked as you begin your new adventure with your new school is “Where do you come from”? I know you will answer with delight
“I come from a school that had it all”.

• We had comforting prayer times when we prayed for students killed at their schools and we had prayer where we spontaneously clapped and sang and danced with our whole hearts and souls.
• We had sports sponsored by the community as well as CYO, and we have a packed trophy case to prove it.
• We had Fine Art Productions that exceeded the professional performances of the high schools.
• We had a school that took its responsibility seriously about helping us master the state standards according to our ability.
• We had a conviction that we were “Never Too Young” to do anything we tried, and we sang about it in our special song.
• We had field trips that took us everywhere while we had fun learning.
• We had Home and School leaders that planned such great and exciting experiences for us like “Trunk and Treat”, “Fall Festivals”, and the very best “Fun N Stuff”.
• We had such great open houses, performances and fairs that every one attended.
• We had “bigs” and “littles”, who we will keep in touch with forever.
• We had a place in which we knew we were safe and where people were concerned about each one of us personally.
• We had the best Food Service Program ever where we even had to use etiquette.
• We had teachers, and staff who loved us and cared for us individually, and who helped us using every skill they had.

“In fact”, you will say, “I came from a place that was so great, we put parts of it on a spectacular video. We had so many things going on, we were in the newspapers almost every week. We come from a school who got us ready for this new adventure, and I am ready to get started in my new school”.
My hope for all of you is that you remember where you come from and that you go right into all that your new school offers. Maybe you will even help bring some of your experiences, and start them at your new school.
Remember to stay in touch with Jesus, with your parish, with the activities at St. Joes, and with all of us from SJS.
As for me, I am looking to be a principal in a new school or a Director of Religious Education in a parish.
I loved being your principal. I love each and every one of you students, parents, families, faculty and staff. You are the best.
May Jesus bless you. May his mother talk to him whenever you need help. And may Joseph motivate you to always do your best.
I love you and thank you for the privilege of being a part of your lives.

Mrs. Kathy CofojohnMrs. Kathy Cofojohn ~ School Secretary (Aug., 1993 - June, 2010)

Dear St. Joseph Families and Friends,
It has been a blessing and privilege to have been a part of St. Joseph School for 15 years. The wonderful memories from all my years here are gifts I will treasure forever.
It is with great sorrow that it will all end. SJS has been such a wonderful place for children to grow. Where ever they may end up, that school will be lucky to have them as an addition to their school family. I know that they will each be a great example to their new surroundings and share their very special spirits with every one that they encounter.
I loved sharing knitting with the students and enjoyed seeing some exceed the teacher.
I will not only miss all the students, faculty, and staff members here, but also the best parents in the whole world. Thank you one and all for all your help and support through out my time here.
I will remember you all fondly.

I want to thank each one of you for sending your child to St. Joseph School and for all your support. I will leave here with many great and fond memories. I will always remember the fun and exciting times like Cow Pie Bingo and paper mache, the sad times like graduation, and watching your children grow, especially, my first kindergarten group (from kindergarten through eighth grade), the look on the sixth graders faces when they discovered I was to be their teacher for the third time.
I started St. Joseph School, nine years ago, as the kindergarten teacher. Then I moved to first grade and finally ended up as the sixth grade teacher. I am hoping to continue teaching and gluing.
I will miss my family here at St. Joseph School and will never forget how everyone comes together to help each other in their times of need. I will keep each one of you in my prayers.

Mrs. Ann BednarMrs. Ann Bednar ~ 5th Gr. Teacher, (1988-2010)

Dear Families of St. Joseph School,
I have spent twenty-two wonderful years as the fifth grade teacher at St. Joseph School. At the end of this school year, I will be retiring from the teaching profession. My plans are to spend time with my husband and family. During the coming year, I plan on doing some traveling. In fact, my family is sending me to Las Vegas in the fall with some friends. I am
so looking forward to seeing the lights. For years, I have been teaching my students about neon lights. Now, I will actually see them!
As I look back over the years, my fondest memories are those I have of Camp Christopher. I especially remember the may times I have gone over the ten foot wall. I also enjoyed mealtimes in the mess hall, the hikes, and campfires. Students can still retell the story about the legend of Manville and Fanny Thorpe and … yes, this was the last year I had
to climb Fanny Hill!
It has been a pleasure for me having been able to work with your children. Each of the students who have passed through my classroom doors holds a special place in my heart. I wish all of you well, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Yours,

Dear St. Joseph Family and Friends,
Thank you for all of your support through out the years. This is my 24th year at SJS. I am so sorry to end my teaching at this great school. SJS has been an important part of my life. I have had the privilege to teach your children Art, Music, Gym, and to be the 7th grade homeroom teacher. Five of my children have attended SJS. They have been enriched because of the experiences they have had at this school. I hope to find another teaching position at another Catholic school and continue working with children.
I will always remember the Fine and Performing Art Shows at SJS. The students worked so hard to make a great experience for their families to see. The Circus, Medieval Fair, Spanish Festival, Chocolate Factory and Broadway shows will always hold special
memories for me.
Thank you for all of your help over the years. Your children will always hold a special place in my heart.

I will miss all of you,

Mrs. Cheryl TurnerMrs. Cheryl Turner ~ 8th Gr. Teacher (2001-2010)

Change is always hard … As I reflect back on the ten years I have taught at SJS, I remember each and every graduate. I especially find joy in watching where they go after high school. We are blessed to have so many successful young men and women as alumni. I would like to thank all the families for all their support as my family transitions to Florida. The surprise farewell party was truly more than I ever would have expected! I wish all the families well as they, too, make a transition. Personally, I will carry the lessons learned at St. Joseph School and Parish to my new teaching career in Florida. Henry David Thoreau said, “Nothing makes
the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance; they make the latitudes and longitudes.” (Latitude, Longitude 28.287754,-80.69767)

I will treasure my years at SJS. Watching the children grow and mature in their faith has filled my heart with joy. My greatest joy is watching them make their First Communion. The class works hard all year on their books to achieve good grades and learn their faith. I hope they keep doing “Good Deeds”. The Staff and teachers are all fantastic people. I loved working with them and learning new ways to help all our children.

Mrs. Kelly CartwrightMrs. Kelly Cartwright ~ Gr. K-8 Spanish Teacher (2007-2010)

St. Joes holds a lot of memories for me. I not only worked here teaching Spanish the past three years, but I attended school here K-8th grade. I've been touched by many people along the way. St. Joseph was more than a school. It was a family. Teachers and students alike genuinely cared for one another. I hope as all of you students move on that you are
able to find that in your new schools. Every student I've met has been unique and special. I wish I had more than one day a week to get to know all of you better. I hope that more than the Spanish lessons, you remember the stories we shared and the encouragement given. I want each of you to know that even though you will face many new challenges as you start a new journey that if you honor God, He will bless you for it. There is nothing you cannot do with Him and nothing good you can do without Him. Shine.

Mrs. Laura VolenikMrs. Laura Volenik ~ Gr. 4-8 Band Instructor (2002-2010)

Dear SJS Family,
The eight years that I taught Band at St. Joseph School were truly wonderful. I remember my very first day so vividly. Miss Frank was so nice and welcoming. As she showed me around, she introduced me to
Mrs. Bednar and said that I could ask her for anything that I needed. This was just the beginning for me. As I got to know the teachers and staff, I was continually amazed and inspired by their generosity and
compassion. This amazing group of people have impacted my life more than they’ll ever know. For that I am very thankful to have been a part of St. Joseph School.
As I drove home after my last Band lessons at SJS I had a smile on my face. Sure I am sad and of course I will miss everyone. But I had a smile on my face because of all the wonderful students, not only in Band, but throughout the school. I smiled because of how much the Band blossomed over the years. I smiled because of the music we made and the magical moments we shared. For that I am very thankful to have been a part of St. Joseph School.
My thoughts and prayers are with each of you as we continue on our journeys. Wherever you’re journey leads you, please know that you and St. Joseph School will always be in my heart.

Dear SJS Families,
I want to extend my own personal “THANK YOU” to all of the families past and present who have supported St. Joseph School with their Blood, Sweat, and Tears over these many years. And yes, that includes having sent your children to school here. You have made SJS a Beacon of Light and Hope for the future that shall not be extinguished as long as there are memories. And there are many! I feel like I have had the honor and privilege to be an honorary grandfather to several thousand kids. And that is Awesome!!! I’ll miss the hugs from the little ones, and watching them all grow from little shavers to tall adolescents.
I have been here along with my wife as parent volunteers since the summer of 1985. Both our children attended this school K-8. I have been on the payroll as the leader of the Food Service team since October of 1994. These have all been the best years of my life to date, and for that I am truly grateful. Working at St. Joseph since 1989, Mr. Garey grew up in Lakewood. He was in the Army Military Police for over four years and moved into this area in 1982. His least favorite task is snow removal although the first time in a season seems fun to him for some reason. (Jason believes St. Joseph gets at least double the amount of snow that the rest of this area gets - at least it sure seems that way!). In addition to his maintenance tasks throughout the parish (and formerly St. Joseph School), Mr. Garey works part time for Hiram and Shalersville in the evening and weekends as the Zoning Inspector and a couple of weekends a year for Michigan International Speedway on the Fire Crew. He has a Limited Class A Water Supply Operator Certificate (to help monitor St. Joseph's public water system).
