In March of 1983 Sister Evangeline Doyle, OP, a well-known sculptor from the Sisters of St. Dominic in Akron, created the Risen Christ piece that had a prominent place behind the altar of St. Joseph Church. The wood for the sculpture was cut from a black walnut tree on the property of St. Joseph's and carved in the image of the Risen Christ.
It was said that she would spend time sitting contemplating the material should was working with, saying, “I am listening to what or who lives within . . . I won’t begin to sculpt until it tells me who is within.” She believed totally in a “sort of soul” living in every created thing and she would look for and listen to what the wood or the marble would reveal.
In 1999 Sister Evangeline became of resident of Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio due to illness. She died on October 15, 2000, at the age of 73 and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron.
In March 2017, the Risen Christ was moved to the wall to the Narthex as you exit the worship space. The altar space now has the crucifix that came from St. Hedwig Church in Toledo that was a gift to the parish from an anonymous donor at that same time.
