What is Truck & Tractor Pulling?
The concept of pulling is based upon who can drag the sled the farthest on a dirt track. The dirt track is usually 300 feet long with two white lines on each side as boundaries. If a competitor would touch the line they will be disqualified. The competitor has two attempts to make a pull, if they do not travel 100 feet in their first attempt. Once the competitor makes his or her pull, it is measured. These distances are recorded and results are based upon those distances. If more than one competitor travels beyond the full distance, a "Pull Off" will occur.
The sled (otherwise known as weight transfer) is hooked to the pulling vehicle. As the competitor takes off down the track, the load will get heavier to pull. The two major components of the sled are the box and pan. The pan is sliding on the ground without much resistance at the start of the pull. The pan will increase friction with the track as the box, which is chain driven, comes towards the front of the sled. Inside of the box are lead blocks weighing a ton. Once the box tops the friction of the pan is greatest and the pulling vehicle slows to a stop.
