Trusting In Christ: A Call to Discipleship
A Pastoral Plan for Evangelization for the Diocese of Youngstown began with the diocesan survey taken during the month of September 2014. Based on this survey and the General Assembly held in November 2014, the Diocesan Chancery Staff, the Presbyteral Council, the Diocesan Pastoral Council and other representative bodies, goals, objectives and actions were proposed for the Diocese of Youngstown. Parishes were asked to review, and prioritize actions according to iimmanent needs. This plan will serve to help guide our diocese in the days before us. Each parish and diocesan office will be asked to review the actions recommended to improve parish/ church life and discern how they can draw from these recommendations in an effort to grow the church and deepen the faith life of all. Change will be necessary, including parish and diocesan financial support, as well as a personnel concentration and energies.
St. Joseph’s Parish Council distributed a Parish Survey in the Spring of 2016 in response to the Diocese of Youngstown’s Pastoral Plan for Evangelization. The Diocesan Pastoral Plan is the result of months of consultation with clergy and laity representing all ages throughout the diocese which highlights seven themes that are most important to all of us as we plan for our future. Parish Council has focused their activities around the Diocesan Plan. The object of our parish survey was to hear parishioners’ views on which of these seven areas they think the parish is performing well and which areas there are opportunities for improvement. Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer these four quick questions. Your responses will guide the Parish Pastoral Council in developing action plans to ensure that the needs of our parish are continually met as well as making St. Joseph Church as vibrant as we can. In order to do this, we need your help. CLICK HERE FOR SURVEY RESULTS
This survey draws on the new Pastoral Plan for the Diocese of Youngstown, Trusting in Christ: A Call to Discipleship. Within the Pastoral Plan there are seven themes:
Christian Service - Assisting parishioners in developing a deeper understanding of the gospel as it applies to those most in need.
Evangelization – The creation of a spirit of discipleship, attracting new disciples, engaging current parishioners and reaching out to less-active parishioners.
Family Life – Recognizing the complexity and diversity of families, provide opportunities for members of God’s family to develop and grow spiritually in the faith.
Worship and Prayer – Liturgies will be unifying, reverent and environmentally attractive, characterized by care and enthusiasm, with full, conscious, active participation of the faithful as the source and summit of Christian life.
Discipleship – Faith Formation / Catechesis – Recognizing and affirming the strong tradition and value of Catholic education as central to the mission of the church, the Diocese and parishes will continue to seek ways to provide quality lifelong formation in Catholic schools, religious education, youth ministry and adult formation opportunities.
Finances – Promote a shared vision of stewardship and accountability regarding how parishes manage their resources.
Administration – Recognizing the important role of the priest in parish life and responding to the declining number of priests, alternative forms of parish leadership and team staffing will be developed as necessary in accord with Canon Law 517.
We believe that these themes capture the areas which are important to all of us as we responsibly plan for our future. You may find the entire DOY Pastoral Plan by clicking here.
Sept. 30/Oct. 1, 2016 Bulletin - Over the last year and a half, members of Parish Council have worked hard to determine the goals, strengths, and weaknesses of the parish using the Pastoral Plan for Evangelization as a guideline. Below is a summary of this process. Parish Council will continue to address these areas and help put into action possible solutions and improvements.
Following the development of the Diocese of Youngstown’s Pastoral Plan for Evangelization (published in July of 2015), St. Joseph’s Parish Council began it’s own Pastoral Planning Process by determining short, medium and long-term goals of the parish. Through a structured process, the purpose and goals of Parish Council were defined. A Council model of “Envision Future” was adopted. Then the strengths and weaknesses of the parish were identified and prioritized. A parish survey was developed in the Spring of 2016 to obtain parishioners’ opinion of what was important to them. Results showed that what Parish Council recognized as strengths and weaknesses were the same as what those responding to the survey felt as well. Throughout the next couple of years, Parish Council focused on addressing the areas that came out during their analysis and the parish survey results. Devoting at least one meeting per area, the Pastoral Plan for Evangelization for the Diocese of Youngstown was used as a guide for recommended actions and were then applied to St. Joseph’s circumstances to develop action items and possible solutions or improvements.
