The pastoral training of future diocesan priests extends beyond the classroom. Formation for diocesan seminarians includes internships to help provide future priests with the knowledge and basic pastoral experience they will need when ministering to Catholics after ordination. Below are the interns who St. Joseph's has had over the years.
During Fr. Joseph Fata's pastorate (July 1, 1981 - Aug. 3, 1988), these young men served as seminary interns at St. Joe's.
Kevin Peters, Seminary Intern ~ Summers 1987, 1988
After completing his studies at Mount St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati, he was ordained June 9, 1990 by Bishop James Malone. Fr. Peters then became Associate Pastor of St. Joan of Arc Parish in Canton. In addition to his duties at St. Joan of Arc Parish, Father Peters served as an advocate for the Diocesan Tribunal from 1993 to 1997. In June of 1998, he began a three-year appointment serving the Archdiocese for the Military Services as a Navy Chaplain and was assigned to the Marine Corps Officers Training Base in Quantico Beach, Va., with the rank of Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy (the Navy provides all staff services for the Marine Corps and Coast Guard, including Chaplain services). In January of 2000, he became Associate Pastor of St. Paul Parish in North Canton before being named Pastor of Mother of Sorrows Parish in Ashtabula in July 2000 until 2006. In addition, he's been Chaplain of Ashtabula's Knights of Columbus Council #360 and a member of the Priests' Council (2003-2006). Following a leave of absence he became Associate Pastor of St. Nicholas Parish in Struthers as of July 1, 2008. On July 15, 2009, Fr. Kevin was named Associate Pastor (parochial vicar) of St. Christine in Youngstown. As of November 27, 2010, he was appointed Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, both in Youngstown. He was then assigned as pastor of St. Angela Merici Parish in Youngstown and also served as Chaplain at Youngstown State University's Newman Center. In July, 2019, Fr. Kevin was given the additional duties of St. Patrick Church in Youngstown.

Joseph Zamary, Seminary Intern ~ Summer, 2000
During Fr. Tom's pastorate, Joe Zamary served his pre-ordination internship at St. Joseph's during the summer of 2000. Born January 8, 1937, in Kowal, Poland, and one of eleven children, Joe grew up in the Youngstown area. A lifelong member of Youngstown Sacred Heart Parish, he graduated from Ursuline High School and intended to study for the priesthood as a young man. He entered St. Mary's College, Kentucky in 1956, and attended St. John Vianney Seminary in Bloomingdale, Ohio. He was unable to continue his seminary studies and worked at several jobs including running an Isaly Dairy store with his brother and managing two Hardee's Restaurants for 24 years.
Joe was ordained to the permanent diaconate on August 20, 1977, serving at Sacred Heart Parish in Youngstown while stile managing a Hardees. Throughout the years, the call to become a priest was always with Deacon Zamary and became stronger as the years went by. Finally, he applied to study for the priesthood in 1998 and entered Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, which specializes in late-in-life vocations. At age 64, a life's ambition was fulfilled when he was ordained May 26, 2001 by Bishop Thomas Tobin and was assigned to serve as Associate Pastor at St. Michael's in Canton. He was a member of the Diocesan Priest's Council and Priests' Retirement Board. As of May 9, 2005, Fr. Joseph Zamary became Administrator of St. James Parish in Waynesburg ("officially" as Pastor when Bishop Murry came to the diocese). He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul in Youngstown and served as a Private Prison Chaplain for the State of Ohio. He retired July 1, 2023. Fr. Zamary passed away on April 4, 2024.
Joseph J. Loftus, Seminary Intern ~
Summers of 2001 & 2002
Joe Loftus was at St. Joseph's for a pastoral experience during the summer of 2001 as part of his theology studies. Fr. Tom allowed him an opportunity to apply academic, spiritual and pastoral ability within our parish community through active participation (an integral part of his total priestly formation). He returned to stay at St. Joe's while working as a Seminary Intern at the Pastoral Care Department of Robinson Memorial Hospital during the summer of 2002. Born Aug. 2, 1939, in Youngstown, he was a 1957 graduate of Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business and a Bachelor of Art in Social Work. He had previously worked for the Mahoning County Child Support Enforcement Agency. He was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Columba Cathedral and a member of St. Luke Parish where he was involved in ministries. In addition, he served at Mahoning County CASA, Hospice of the Valley, Knights of Columbus and Sigma Tau Gamma and was a member of the U.S. Navy for four years. He had been married and had three daughters and three grandchildren. Joe Loftus, died September 19, 2001, age 62, at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, where he was a fourth-year theology student studying for ordination to the priesthood for the Diocese of Youngstown. He is buried at Calvery Cemetery in Youngstown.

Daniel Finnerty, Seminary Intern ~ Summer, 2010
During Fr. Garvey's pastorate, Daniel Finnerty, a seminarian studying for the Diocese of Youngstown, spent ten weeks living at the parish during the summer of 2010. He had just finished his first year of theology at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati, having completed five years overall. Dan is from Holy Family Parish in Poland, Ohio, where he has lived his entire life. Rev. Daniel Finnerty was ordained June 20, 2015 at St. Columba Cathedral. In July, 2015, he was appointed as Parochial Vicar (Associate Pastor) to St. Paul Parish in North Canton. Fr. Finnerty is currently pastor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Geneva, Pro-Temp Administrator of St. Mary in Orwell and Sacred Heart in Rock Creek. He also serves Chaplain at St. John Catholic School in Ashtabula and Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the diocese.
Daniel Gooding,
Seminary Intern ~ Summer, 2013
Daniel Gooding, a seminarian for the Diocese of Youngstown attending Mount Saint Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati, spent the summer of 2013 with our parish. From Canton, Ohio, and having graduated from Perry High School in Massillon, Ohio in 2008, he received a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Political Science from Muskingum University in 2012. In 2017, Dan left the seminary.
During Fr. Ed Stafford's pastorate (September 1, 2015-to date), the following men served as seminary interns at St. Joe's.
Jerry Land, Seminary Intern ~ Summer, 2017 and Summer, 2018
Jerry Land, a seminarian for the Diocese of Youngstown, studied at the Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin and hoped to be ordained, God willing, in 2023. Born in 1968 in Pittsburgh, PA and then moving to Austintown while still young, he has five brothers. Jerry attended St. Joseph Parish School in Austintown and then St. Christine’s in Youngstown. He graduated from Fitch High School and eventually went on to graduate from YSU and then Loyola University New Orleans with a Masters in Pastoral Studies. He grew up as a member of St. Joseph, Austintown and has served in Eucharistic Ministry, Reader, Leader of Prayer, Youth Ministry, and is member of the K of C (4th Degree). He likes the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates and enjoys spaghetti and chili. While here he was immersed in our Ox Roast Fair and other an observant of the various activities of the parish life. Jerry left formation and currently resides in Hermitage, Pennsylvania.
